Biography

Hi!

I was born and raised in Australia and lived there until marrying my lovely American wife and moving to New Jersey in 2003. It's not remotely like Australia, but I've finally become somewhat used to it :-)

I started working regularly in bands at age 16. These days, I rarely do live gigs, though I do jam with talented friends at every opportunity.

I'm primarily a keyboard player and programmer (sounds and midi sequences) and vocalist, but am also quite handy on lap steel guitar and am currently learning the bass guitar. I am also a vocalist, composer and mixer.

I've played many styles; predominantly pop, rock, blues, country and 80s contemporary modern jazz; Dave Grusin, Lee Ritenour, Larry Carlton, Steely Dan.

I've been influenced by too many styles and artists to list, but here are a few; the soundtrack to the "Man of La Mancha" broadway musical, Nelson Riddle Orchestra, Mozart, Dave Grusin, Atlanta Rhythm Section, Boz Scaggs, TOTO, ELO, Larry Carlton, Michael Franks,The Dixie Dregs,George Benson, The Carpenters,Huey Lewis, Stevie Wonder, Foo Fighters, Hot Chili Peppers, James Taylor, Madonna, YES, Split Enz, Muse, and too many current artists to mention.

And Bonnie Raitt is right up there in my top influences; probably because she does everything covering ballads, blues "great" country, indie pop, indie electronica, EDM, rock and funk.

Sometimes I'm in the mood for a lovely ballad to which I can add tasteful, sparing notes with the lap steel and at other times I want everything howling, wild and cranked up to 11.

I have been composing instrumentals for about 2 years and am currently selecting and developing tracks for my first EP. I hesitate to call the EP's style "new age" and prefer to refer to it as similar to Mike Oldfield.

I would like to try my hand at songwriting, but lyrics are not a strong point. If someone sent me some lyrics, I'd love to write the music. I have studied music theory, so I know a few things about melodic structure and harmony.
I look forward to having fun jamming online with y'all!

Take care and look out for each other,
Pete

Instruments

Keyboards, Vocals, Lap Steel

I primarily play keys. I own a Casio electric piano, a vintage Kawai synth and a lovely Yamaha TG-77 FM synth module.

I have a few lap steels; two I made myself and a cheapie for which I'll make a nicer body.

My homemade electric 3-string, is something that I have a lot of fun with.

More recently I bought a Rogue Bass, which has a lovely action and tone.

I would love one day to again own a Rhodes 73 electric piano and an acoustic piano (old pianos are easy to obtain, but right now I don't have anywhere to put it!)

recording devices

My DAW is Reaper.
Equipment wise, since I'm very fussy, I can't afford a pc audio interface that I'd be happy with; so I use an 8 track Fostex digital recorder to record live parts and then transfer them to pc via USB. Yes, it's a tad cumbersome, but it works for me.

I use AKG open-backed headphones to mix and am happy with the results. As long as finished tracks sound good as they emerge from the home and car stereo and earbuds, I'm a happy camper.

I use a Shure SM-58 mic with or without the windshield on, depending on what I'm doing with it. Results are quite good, but I do look forward to having a condenser mic later on.
