Music and Human Emotion: Humans experience emotion after a series of events beginning with perception, memory processing, neurotransmitter release, and finally, cognition. Sound is perceived by humans as a unique form of touch. Take note that emotional states induced by music are identical to emotional states induced by non-musical episodes, both physically and neurochemically. This means that music induces emotion directly. It works by activating our capacity for empathy a sensitivity most purely exhibited in the mother-infant bond. Humans use music to: change emotions, release emotions, match their current emotion, relieve anxiety, understand or solve problems, and simply to enjoy themselves.
