Ernie440 Oh man, that's a hard question .. if you want to go old school, check out James Brown's band .. instrumentals .. I used to jam with some of these for the bass anyway .. first thing that came to mind ... :D

The Meters are another classic old school funk band if you haven't looked them up ... +1
