Rebuilding

My castle, created
when I scraped, packed, and saved,
thinking I would be safe,
and could abide, inside,
my abode true,
like a loyal friend.

Built with the strength of the tide,
it faced away from the stronger winds,
and so I chose
to ignore the incessant lapping
of the waves marching toward the door.

Creeping ever closer,
he wanted more,
his greedy foam
seeping through the floor.

Let me in, let me in
he shouted,
I want the entire shore.

And so I cringed and hid
inside the castle’s quiet chambers,
the sound of the sea’s fury
reminding me of who’s in charge.

The cobalt waves
continued laughing at me.
other plans had he,
intent on having his way.

Soon, he was yanking down the walls,
pulling up the planks,
and hauling them out to sea,
the sand, blending into the bottom
now invisible,
never to be.

What\'s now to become of me?

But still I stood,
there, watching the water smug
with its apparent victory.
the sand receding in defeat.

I squinted into the setting sun
with new fortitude inside
and again building,
I begun.
