Ma Who? Vishnu's Cob-On!
Back on my Yamaha kit. Gone all '70s here. Moved my overheads into the traditional X/Y position, covered the drums in damping, put the kick mic right inside the kick drum, put in loads of damping. Then, it would appear, went a bit nuts. Now I'm knackered.
My remit with this fab retro template from Frank was to do a kind of Billy Cobham impression from his Mahuvishnu Orchestra days. I'm no match for Billy Cobham - few are. So I ...

mpointon Thanks, Johhny! I can't help it :| I never know whether it's over-the-top and just too mad for it's own sake! I'm also my own worst critic - awful habit, I know. +0

OliVBee seriously great drumming buddy !! the recording sounds fine to my ears and i like what you did to achieve that :)+1

mpointon Thanks, Oli! I'm determined to get that '70s sound. It has to be said, everything at source being 'dead' like this makes mixing a lot easier! +1

mpointon And the funny thing is that, although narrower, the X/Y effect on the stereo imaging is *much* better! I've also narrowed the close-miked toms pan to try and match their position in the overhead image. That seems to make a difference too. +1

OliVBee and no wonder why the X/Y is so popular hehe ... the track sounds great ! also love how you kept the kick boom under control ;) +1
March 16 2016 22:29:34

mpointon For once! I've discovered just how much 'boom' my bass enhancement speaker disguises, so I double-check on headphones now! :) +1

mpointon I should mention that, once again, it's my cheap and 'nasty' Premier snare on the job here! It has a Remo Fiberskyn head on it but it just delivers punch where my Ludwig doesn't.
I need to look at the heads I'm using my Ludwig - supposedly one of the most-popular snares ever made!
I should also mention I'm back on miking the snare to and bottom again! Didn't have room to mention that above. +1

OliVBee that Premier snare is quite handy when it comes tocracking punch ! though i still love your ludwig better when character is needed ;) +1

mpointon I just need to use that piccolo more now! Now that I've sussed miking snares, I need to give that mother another airing. +1

mpointon I've done a few with two snares. 54988 has them. The second snare is off to the right though. +1
