Here's to 15 years of collaboration on wikiloops

wikiloops celebrates 15 years of online music collaboration

Fifteen years ago, wikiloops started as a simple idea: give musicians a place to connect, collaborate, and create together, no matter where they are. Today, we are celebrating 15 years of that idea becoming something far bigger than we could have imagined.

What makes this milestone special is not just the number. It is the people behind it.

Every single track on wikiloops exists because someone decided to pick up their instrument, share their creativity, and invite others to join in. Over the years, this has grown into a unique, living catalogue of music created by real people, across borders, time zones, and cultures. Drummers laying foundations for guitarists they will never meet. Bass players adding depth to a late-night piano recording from the other side of the world. Voices joining instrumentals and turning them into songs.

This is what wikiloops has always been about: connection through music.

The past 15 years have not always been easy. The world has gone through major challenges. A global pandemic that isolated people physically. Increasing political tensions and shifting international relationships. Ongoing conflicts that affect how we see each other and the world around us. Through all of this, something remarkable kept happening on wikiloops: people continued to collaborate. They listened to each other. They built on each other's ideas. They created something together.

In a time where division often feels louder than unity, this community has consistently chosen the opposite.

That is something worth celebrating.

We also want to take this moment to acknowledge something very important: wikiloops is what it is because of you. The platform itself is just the stage. The music, the creativity, the feedback, the encouragement, the friendships - all of that comes from the community.

You have built the archive. You have shaped the culture. You have made wikiloops a place where musicians feel welcome, supported, and inspired.

And that is why this anniversary is not just ours. It belongs to all of you.

Looking ahead

We are not slowing down, no - we are moving in into your pocket if you like:
the brand-new wikiloops mobile app, ready for testing
We are currently releasing the wikiloops mobile app, bringing the experience you know to a more accessible, on-the-go format.
The goal is simple: make it easier to discover tracks, join collaborations, and stay connected with the community wherever you are.
The android app is now available for testing on the Play Store, the iPhone version will follow shortly.

As always, wikiloops will continue to evolve, but the core idea remains unchanged: real musicians creating real music together.

If you have ever uploaded a track, left a comment, joined a jam, or simply listened and appreciated what others created - you are part of this story.

Thank you for being here, for contributing, and for keeping the spirit of collaboration alive.

Here's to the next chapter - and once again thanks to all who helped make it happen!

Dick thanks for this!
Since we never advertised wikiloops anywhere due to lack of budget, such mentions of wikiloops on the web have been super-helpful to get noticed, I so often wished more people would become aware of how leaving a link to the 'loops here and there really makes a big difference for a project like this.
Now that I think about it, this is what the early internet worked like - leaving links to cool stuff for each other. Is we getting old?
