To me a riff it is that (melodic or rhythmic) hook that makes you immediately recognise the song. Many believe it's only to be used for some guitarlicks but I differ that opinion. Although I could also pick some drumbeats, key- or horn-riffs from which a few bars is enough to recognize the song I of course had to choose some classic bass-riffs... Tried to keep it at 5 but decided to double that and even that seems too short

Walk on the wild side - Lou Reed (Herbie Flowers)
Stand by me - Ben E. King (Lloyd Trotman)
Billie Jean - Michael Jackson (Louis Johnson)
Love games - Level 42 (Mark King)
Good times - Chic (Bernard Edwards)
Too young to die - Jamiroquai (Stuart Zender)
Just the two of us - Grover Washington jr (Marcus Miller)
Lovely day - Bill Withers (Jerry Knight)
Ain't no stopping us now - McFadden and Whitehead (Jimmy Williams)
The chicken - Jaco Pastorius
