She came from Wolverhampton,
She stole my heart away,
Tracy girl you really rocked my world,
And I wonder where you are today.
I wonder if you got married,
I wonder if you've got kids,
You always said that you would go to China,
And I wonder if you ever did.
Beautiful midland diamond,
Pure Black Country pearl,
With a smile so bright it could light the sky,
How I loved you Tracy girl.
I remember those dark eyes,
I remember them looking at me,
Sitting all day in a café window,
For the price of a cup of tea.
And we said we'd get married,
And we said we'd have kids,
We said we'd both get on that plane to China,
But of course we never did.
I've been to Wolverhampton,
It's grimy and it's grey,
It's people are the beating heart of England,
And one stole mine away.
She stole my heart away,
Tracy girl you really rocked my world,
And I wonder where you are today.
I wonder if you got married,
I wonder if you've got kids,
You always said that you would go to China,
And I wonder if you ever did.

If you are not aware of Wolverhampton, it's in the west
of the middle of England. It's part of a region known
as the "Black Country" which was a major centre of
heavy industry from the 19th century industrial
revolution through to the mid-20th century when someone
decided we wouldn't bother with making stuff in the UK
any more.
Most trace the "Black Country" name to all of the soot
and grime that accumulated there during this period.
It was a little grim in the latter part of the last century
but extensive efforts have been made to improve things there
and folks I know that do call it home say it's a great place to
live and work. And their football team is back in the premier league
- though struggling a bit this season.
If English is not your first language (but you think you have
good conversation skills), you might rethink this if you visit.
There is a lot of fascinating dialect and slang that is found
only there. I remember Tracy teaching me to conjugate the verb
"to be" all those years ago it went something like:
Or somesuch - apologies to native speakers.
"Tara a bit" means Goodbye :(
