What does your music say about you?

Does your music reflect your personality ?
*Do easy going people like easy going music ?
*Do creative folk like more unusual structures of chords and melodies ?
*If you play or listen to Rock, Grunge, Death Metal, Punk or whatever does that match your lifestyle ?
*Does a love of Classical or Operatic music relate to your financial status or upbringing ?
*Are Pop music fans more sociable, like a dance, go with the crowd etc ?
*If Country or Folk music is your thing do you enjoy story telling and tradition ?
*What about Blues lovers, is it the regular format or the down beat lyrics that appeal to your personality
*Do people with similar musical tastes get along in other ways ? Does your partner or friend have the same taste as you ?
My musical tastes are indescribably eclectic, there is no genre I dislike. I have made political songs but I'm not political, Gospel songs just because I love harmonies. Love songs and break-up songs that are nothing to do with my experiences
But I can't listen to long songs because I get bored quickly (as in life). However I use music to help me meditate and relax, but just quietly in the background.
Finally, I love the 'oldies' with easy to hear lyrics and a memorable hook... but I grew up listening to these. Do older wikiloopers find they are nostalgic types ?

Congrats to another great thread starter Shamika, I will have to think about that one first - deep subject!!
But to start, let's have a look at, "Does your partner or friend have the same taste as you?" - lol no :O!! Mrs. Gee HATES most of my music, nor does she like the music I am listening to. She tolerates some of it for a short while, but usually after half an album comes the usual "this is terrible". She likes melodic stuff, ABBA, Adele, that sort. But despite this we get along (most of the time at least ;).

Very good thread and also very good questions Shamika :) And like TeeGee and his wife, at ours it's the same, she likes Siti Nurhaliza (I do as well) but doesn't like Jazz, Blues & Co like I do. Sometimes we discover nice music in films and series, like the one from IAmNeeta (that's the name of a young Malaysian band), or while we still had Netflix I discovered K-Pop.
I think it all keeps me young, like Wikiloops does as well, or the former high school big band of our daughter (she just graduated).
What I do not like so much is German Schlager which I find quite embarrassing, and the audience which seems to always clap on the Ones and Threes. My dad used to call "our" music "jungle music", but in fact that's a compliment rather than an insult IMHO...

My ex liked same kind of music I did - it was about the only thing we had in common ... but... I'd play her something, she'd hate it, then years later "discover it, play it to me and we'd have 2 cd's of the same thing. Basically she hated me so my opinion must be wrong. I remember when after almost 20 years of disparaging remarks she suddenly "got" Neil Young.
Me, I like all music apart from modern bland formulaic pop and that dance stuff that only works with acid and E's.

I guess I'm a pretty stereotypical old metalhead. Long hair in the back, balding in the front. :D Loner, sci-fi/fantasy fan, wears dark clothes, plain or with vaguely evil imagery.
The music I play tends to be rather blunt and angular vs. flowing and subtle, even compared to other metallurgists. Not sure what that might say about my personality tho.

I had a good think about this one - I don't know if the music affected my personality, but I guess my upbringing and teen unhappiness made me get drawn into the vibe and feel of the blues.
I started to listen to music on a regular basis when I was about 10, 11 - it was glam rock 70ies, just before the Punk period started. Sweet, Slade, T-Rex, Queen, Status quo, Steve Miller Band, Thin Lizzy - that was on the radio. But once in a while you got to hear a Blues-Rock track, some Led Zep, UFO, Fleetwood Mac. and that fascinated me even then although I could not understand neither the lyrics not where it came from - but having a somewhat miserable childhood I guess that's where the connection to the blues was made.
Later at around 15 I discovered Eric Clapton, and from there I got to all the great blues guys. And Peter Green, probably the one guy who most influenced me. I started to look in the shops for Vinyls of Howlin Wolf, the 3 Kings, John Lee Hooker, and it goes on.
I am not African, but I get it. I understand the blues, and if you listen to my playing, there will always be a touch of it there, even if I was not allowed to play bluesy on the Herring King Band albums ;)

I'm loving the thoughtful and interesting replies that are coming up. I gave you a lot of things to consider that you may not have thought about before. Please keep 'em coming... we all want to know these things :W

When I was younger I was the hook man, if I heard any set of chords I could add a catchy hook. Must be an age thing it's completely gone, or, I just discard my hooks as trite nowadays. There's a lot to said for youthful innocence in music.

I quit practicing and jamming with my basses. Musically, a lot freer with a bass in hands, but developed unusual pains, so hung it up. A lot of focused memories of listening to jazz and progressive bassists flies out the window. I can recall keyboard players as well, but don’t try to imitate the greats at the drop of a hat.
Happy with keyboards. Yes, but skills not as reliable. You learn to juggle what’s in your bag. Lots of free creative time at wikiloops.com, but also a lot of pleasin’. Someone wrote a song about that I believe...

this track, slide, by slave, always stands out in my mind. i was like 8 listening to my dad's 8-tracks...and this one always stuck out (dad had lots of genres of 8-tracks to listen to). the cover seemed sexual or like something i shouldn't be seeing. it felt taboo to listen to this. it opens up almost in a scary nature ( again, i was 8 :D ) and to me, at the time, there was so much "sounds" in this. there's like a tricycle horn in that intro, a scary voice, those sorta laid back vox and talking, horns, a funky-ass bass and drum groove, ripping guitar, and other things i don't know...i mean, this felt like something i shouldn't be listening to lol :D
just things i wasn't used to hearing in a song. but i would blast it when i was usually alone in the living room.
so, to answer the question, what does your music say about you? hopefully that i'm a bit nutty and will join in on just about anything :)

Interesting question. From about 16 to 20 I practiced a run on the guitar for up to 10 hours a day with great pleasure. This pleasure became a life-shaping method for me and I adopted it for my studies and later life. That worked wonderfully.
Living with my ex-wife shaped the way I stopped listening to music for 25 years. Whenever I wanted to hear something, she said, "turn it off". I did the same to her. The result I'm missing 25 years of music history today. kind of funny isn't it?

You know, It seems like wives and partners really had/have an influence on music habits and aspirations. I knew a guy who's (ex wife) made him wear headphones all the time, he was a really good musician (actually got paid for it) so eventually the headphones went and so did the misses :)

I had my gear in a summerhouse at the bottom of the garden. She was not encouraging of my output, she wouldn't even listen to it. No conception of anything other than pro recorded and mastered successful music. That's a high bar to set but to be fair that's reality.abuitremorem wrote:

She would play me her latest discovery and if I didn't agree it was fantastic within a few seconds (I kid you not) I was deemed a miserable tasteless git.
