I knew a girl called Amanda,
And she was cultured and rich,
Only took about two weeks with her before,
She had made me her b*tch,
But'cha know I kinda liked that,
Made me feel scuzzy inside,
I never even knew that was part of my jam,
It was a hell of a ride.

And we made love in the bedroom,
And we made love in the hall,
We even did at the National Theatre,
Up against a cloakroom wall.

I knew a girl called Natasha,
And she was wild and intense,
She went with the boys and she went with the girls,
She kinda sat on the fence,
But'cha know I kinda liked that,
Some days she bought home a friend,
But when she turned up with a guy called "Sebastian",
I knew it had to end.

And we made love in the morning,
And we made love through the night,
We did it listening to "The Archers Omnibus",
You know, that didn't feel right.

I knew a girl called Samantha,
She was creative and smart,
And every day was like an exhibition,
And she was like a work of art,
But'cha know I kinda liked that,
She was so fragile and rare,
But every time she turned the studio lights out,
Paint was flying everywhere.

And we made love with our clothes on,
And we made love in the nude,
We did that once when we were painted purple,
It got us both in the mood.

There is also an occasional tendency around these parts to elongate the third syllable and give it all the emphasis whilst saying the first two as quickly as possible.

Viz:

A'm'n-daaaaaah,
N'ta- shaaaaaah,
S'm'n - thaaaaah,

[notes]

I should probably explain one thing. "The Archers" is a long running radio
soap opera that has been broadcast by the BBC in the UK for 70-odd years (yes, seventy).

It is an "everyday story of country folk" and currently a key part of the Radio 4
schedule. It has a dedicated listener-base which is both large for the staion and
yet a small minority of the UK's population (stereotypically white, middle class and
middle aged/senior).

However, a lot of people are aware of it and it is something of a cultural touchstone.
Its iconic theme tune was once the recommended rhythm that people performing
hands-only CPR on a heart attack victim should have in their head. This has now been
updated to "Staying Alive" by the Bee Gees, more appropriate I guess but also a
possible indication of how the show is slipping from the national consciousness.

(CPR is obviously not the only activity that could be performed to that beat.)

An inceasingly urban-centric population seems to think of it as a twee view of a bygone
age but devotees will tell you that the people, lifestyles and issues dealt with are
very much alive today - and it does try hard to deal with contemporary matters and
plotlines.

At present, the show transmits six new episodes a week (about 15 mins per day) and
you can listen to the whole 90 as an "Omnibus" edition on a Sunday morning. I
originally wrote "The Shipping Forecast" but changed it to the AO on a whim.

“Dover, Wight, Portland, Plymouth, four or five, increasing six soon, rain or slight
drizzle, good.”
