Because when you map the coverage that a network of towers provides in an area, it looks rather like a biological cellular structure.

The term originated (I believe) at Bell Labs in the US when the original networks were planned (though the internet will provide some disagreement...)

I like the British terms "mobile" (more descriptive) or "moby" (cute). Or even the German "handy" (cuter still) viz: "wo ist mein handy??!?!"

Good map that does indeed look like an artificial biological structure. It also shows widespread coverage, and therefore triangulation, very well. I thought perhaps "cell" phone was because THEY now know, within a few feet, where everyone is, rather like a tagged offender who has a tracking device attached so they can't escape surveillance. I don't know if those mobile tagging devices have microphones built in but THEY will no doubt want the ability to listen into their conversations. Very handy gadgets, especially for THEM.
