Vinyl-hoarding dads have said it for years, but their claims about pop music's decline are now backed by research.
Song lyrics really are becoming simpler and more repetitive, says a study this week in the journal Scientific Reports.
Lyrics have also become angrier and more self-absorbed these past four decades, it says, reinforcing the claims of nostalgic Boomers and Gen Xers.
Researchers analyzed the lyrics of 12,000 English-language songs released between 1980 and 2020.
The study encompassed rap, country, pop, R&B, and rock songs.
Overall, the researchers found that lyrics became simpler over the decades.
Lead study author Eva Zangerle
Songs became easier to understand and the number of different words used also declined, researchers found.
Lead study author Eva Zangerle, a computer scientist at Austria's University of Innsbruck, said music lyrics were a 'mirror of society.'
'What we have also been witnessing in the last 40 years is a drastic change in the music landscape — from how music is sold to how music is produced,' Zangerle said.
Over the 40 years, there was repeated upheaval in how people listened to music.
The vinyl records and cassette tapes of the 1980s gave way to the CDs of the 1990s.
Then the arrival of the internet led to the algorithm-driven streaming platforms of today.
The researchers looked at the emotions expressed in lyrics, and how many different and complicated words were used, and how often they were repeated.
'Across all genres, lyrics had a tendency to become more simple and more repetitive,' said Zangerle.
The results confirmed previous research which had shown fewer positive, joyful lyrics over time, and a rise in those that express anger, disgust, or sadness.
Lyrics have also become much more self-obsessed, with words such as 'me' or 'mine' becoming much more popular.
The number of repeated lines rose most in rap over the decades, Zangerle said, adding that it obviously had the most lines to begin with.
'Rap music has become more angry than the other genres,' she told AFP.

(My monday morning rant)
Is anyone surprised about this? It`s simply catering to taste. Music consumers and their demands and expectations (or rather lack of demand and expectations) are a reflection of what happens on a much broader scale.
Music is consumed and not listened to.
Always go with what the majority has on their playlists.
Presentation is more important than content.
Live acts don`t play to gig attendees but to cell phones and cameras.
Music creators and music listeners have been pushed back so far that they hardly even qualify as a sub-culture (at the moment).

This should surprise noone here. Thats why most come here.
Its not only music ...painting , and the other arts are dumbed down.
"Abstract "has been abused to the point people paint absolute crap that touches noone.
Avante Gard is just an excuse for weirdness because they have no focus or profound message. This of course breeds offensive art for the sake of publicity and reaction.
Being over the top offensive in the name of art requires absolutley no talent. None. Its the tell tale sign of a talentless hack who has no artistic talent.Their only chance to get a reaction is thru vulgarity and finding people to offend and ridicule.
Thats just being an asshole.
You have talentless songs about W.A.P....
Crucifixes submerged in urine...etc..
All talentless assholes. You never see them create beauty and complexity. Its always offensiveness, hate and low brow trash to distract from the fact , they contribute no skill or talent to the art.But they will tell everyone "They are artists!". Its YOUR fault you dont understand their idiotic nontalented effort.
Whatever.Go away.
Then theres movies:
Im a downer at the company water cooler whenever someone goes on about the "great new television series" because 99.9 % of the time , the shows are mind numbing low IQ garbage.
I often hear certain actors are "great actors" but yet every movie, they always have the same smirks and eyebrow expressions and the characters they play are exactly the same just different movie.
Denzel, Deniro, Scarlet Johannson, Ryan Renyolds, Kevin Costner...they play the same character every f'ing movie over and over and over again and there is zero acting involved.
Theyre not acting at all.
Julia Roberts does the same stupid close up face expressions every movie . Its always the same scenes just different one line sentences , to make the audience go "Awe!"..... and show you how cute she is . Evry movie no matter what she is in, is exactly the same.
The older actors if you look at movies from the 90s and earlier..yes they did act at one time.
Now the actors just do the same close up facials and lift their eyebrows, or do some stupid smirk theyre known for and just say quick one liners that are stitched and edited together.
Acting... dont make me laugh. There hasnt been actors since last century.
Im glad Hollywood is going broke.
But why stop at the arts?
That dumbness has filtered down into business, companies, engineering and science as well.
Ugh you are right Mysounds...this topic is infuriating.
The world has become Atlas Shrugged and all the talent in every field has simply disappeared and the talentless monkeys run everything.

There was always stupid music around, I grew up listening to music in the 70ies and there was a lot of stupid lyrics around, and formulated music. Usually bands were looking to make that number 1 hit, and others were trying to copy the success. BUT, there were also Beatles and King Crimson, Genesis, Pink Floyd and many many rock acts that were making serious music with a message that was more than baby baby shake your booty... there were always stupid sheep people around, only now through the internet they are getting much more exposure.
To touch on Little Wings movie comment: I never thought about it this way, I think the movie plots and many of the series on Netflix are indeed crap, they are way too woke for me many times (sorry Wokies, that's just old me). However, I am thinking of old Hollywood actors like the Duke, he did not have that many new faces, did he? Even Clint Eastwood, great actor but he is giving me the go on punk make my day face every time, and I LOVE it. So yes, actors can only do a certain amount of faces, after 20 movies they run out of new faces or mannerisms. I blame the executives, it's them that typecast the actors and demand from them to act in a certain way. It's they that demand they do their cute face every time, same as they demanded at least twice a movie actor Xy takes off his shirt...
By the way, I watch a lot of foreign movies because of that, there are some amazing Japanese, Korean, Taiwanese gangster movies and series, brilliant.

We are the collected few that want to pursue music as a form of expressing ourselves. If I spend time creating something, I want it to have an impact on the listener. There are a select few that want to create something that is relevant to other individuals (I think of people using Wikiloops).
I listen closely to what my children absorb. I often wonder if their poor selections are due to their exposure (me steering their selections? OMG I hope not!). However, I know their selections merit more than what the crowd listens to. They make their own choices and should always do so. They should not follow what another individual pursues as their choice to consume music. I would yell at my children if they behaved this way.
I have had a wide variety of musical influences due to my exposure to classical music, rock music, country music, jazz music, blues music, etc... However, as a parent I could ill afford to take my children to a ballet (which I did) or spring for a rock concert (costs are excessive for live venues and I don't have the revenue to pay for them). I'd rather hear what they are interested in and allow them to make their own decisions. I'd rather give them a bevy of material that they can listen to so they can improve what they listen to. I do think that we don't always take the time to improve the quality of music we listen to because we haven't taken the time to absorb enough content.
I find myself listening to much more content on Wikiloops than any other listening venue because everyone on Wikiloops has a personal interest in expressing themselves if they are playing an instrument or doing a vocal. I do think an artist should earn income if they wish and that they are entitled to make a profit it they deem it important enough.
I absolutely agree that many producers and artists will create garbage that no one should spend a dime on and that are not worthy of being classified as 'art'. Wikiloops was created to promote all individuals tastes in music. There are a select few of us that have joined here because we have a quest to make sure what we create is enjoyed by someone else.
Being able to convey a meaningful message to a listener shouldn't be something considered simplistic. It takes time, effort, skill, and materials to encapsulate what we wish to convey. I look at the equipment I have purchased, the years of practice and then have to decide what I want to tell a person so that they continue to be intrigued enough to want to listen to my full rant on my guitar.
I'd like to think of the effort I make to craft a piece of music is occasionally rewarded by someone else listening to what I did. All listeners are entitled to absorb what they want even if I don't agree with their selection. My expectations are tiny. "Have only one individual listen to what I have created and find some type of joy from it."
Shouldn't the music we listen to fit our personal criteria? If you've bothered to listen to an artist you don't like, you have reached the highest point of freedom. This assumes you can turn it off/change the channel. The messages being expressed aren't something you have to continue to absorb - unless you are being tortured.
I also want my children to select what they are interested in absorbing. I know that my children have their own criteria which will always be different than my own. They deserve to make their own choices no matter how inferior and poor they are. I hope that I have instilled wisdom for them to avoid making selections that promote violence, hatred, etc...
My parents continue listening to music selections that I don't always associate the word 'good' with. I think of it like listening to an artist you always enjoy and then they play something in the left field you weren't expecting. However, my parents will enjoy what they deem superior. Am I any different than my parents?
My father just played me some very raunchy 50's music which I had never listened to. It made me think that stupid music has been around since the dawn of time. :)
In the end, I think of my children as being entitled to listen to anything they wish to hear. I won't agree with their selections every time but want them to be influenced by things they have heard when near me. I expect/demand my children to make their own choice but to make sure it will be a positive influence. Because they are inundated with content, they are overwhelmed with poor selections. We should do what we can to curb their appetite for stupidity and help to influence their decisions whenever possible. And yes, there is plenty of content that doesn't deserve a millisecond of their time.
Lyrics wise, I continue to see poorly framed rants. I think of rap music and the themes found within that music as being something I don't want my children listening to. The influence of that culture of violence isn't something that I deem as beneficial to anyone. However, not every piece of rap music is framed around violence. It's the selected pieces which focus on that type of subject matter which dissuade me.
Lyrics are the final glue which the listener has to absorb. Being able convey some type of meaningful contribution to society is an extremely difficult thing to do if you don't want to repeat something already heard by a few billion individuals. The lyricist needs to step outside of the standards that all others have heard before and create something innovative. This is an extremely challenging idea but one that can be done with the correct mindset.

"mainstream" music can promote anything garbage or otherwise because they have the industry. In short most current modern pop mainstream music is not a reflection of the culture but rather the culture is a reflection of it as mainstream pop is part of the culture shaping apparatus.. and they're not trying to shape anything beneficial it seems...;o). and yes this has been the case for a while now but was not always so....it comes down to whose controlling the promotion of music and why and for how long...despite the arrival of home recordings and platforms to promote your own music the mainstream industry still has the power to make stars wherever they want and promote anything. This technological age see's a lot of fake music...not played by actual humans.....I see it even on private music platforms as well...
pro's and con's to that..I doubt very much that the average non musically inclined person ever pauses to think whether or not the music they listen to is actually played by humans...and they don't care too much either way....at least it doesn't seem so. that all being said real players will always exist and one day they will be all that's left.....yay!!

interesting topic. makes me wonder if we are just declining in our education and understanding of language and communication as a whole. short ways of communicating now are the norm, a short text or email. never truly telling a story, just quick facts that get spit out. maybe imagination is declining with everything being fed to people digitally. you don't have to really think, you can google. then you can regurgitate and rearrange to make it yours. remember writing cursive? did anyone write calligraphy? didn't the language look so elegant and stylish? maybe lyrics and their creativity are just a microcosm of where we sit as a society.

evolution of the offer of popular music through the analysis of the music of James Bond... Sorry it's in French but the musical parts are sufficiently explicit.

it's used as a tool of influence...I want those tools back...a lot of folks miss that and see everything as just a natural process when it is not always so. Let's take back the music...Let's make Real music (by the people and for the people) Great Again! lol

this topic is as old as humanity the people are not getting stupid, we are getting old and bored. Of course there is a lot more music, movies and stuff and trash is promoted the good stuff is not.
But it still is there, and i still don't understand what is about getting a chance to listen to everything for 10 bugs a month.
Trick is just to listen to full albums and not follow the advertisement.
