Caught the children out to play at the dying of the day,
In a place they really shouldn't oughta be,
A game of hide and seek by the bending of the creek,
Down there by the hanging tree.

So I told 'em all straight that the hour's kinda late,
And a ghost is what they're likely gonna to see,
Of the innocent man lynched here by the Klan,
Up high upon the hanging tree.

Kids, I tell you no lies, saw it with my own eyes,
Way back in eighteen seventy-three,
And if he catches you, he's gonna wanna hang y'all too,
You’ll be swinging from the hanging tree.

One boy was kinda bold and he said "you ain't that old,
You'd have to be a hundred and three!"
So I yanked off my head to show 'em how I got dead,
Right here at the hanging tree.

They ran away screaming to a night's bad dreaming,
And I know you're disappointed in me,
But it's what I do best to get little bit of rest,
Down here at the hanging tree.
