The sea is slowly
Stripping the shoreline
With its wet greedy fingers,
Reaching further and further
With every wave that breaks.

How much sand does it need?
Why does it keep grabbing for more,
When it has fathoms of sediment below?

The shoreline is quiet,
Impotent as it continues to sleep,
Simply minding it's own business,
As another wave unfurls
Its hungry fists
Ready to take again.

I see sand gazing at the setting sun,
The referee of the day,
Waiting, watching,
Hoping that something can be done,

But its wise yellow eye
Is helpless against
The daily ebb and flow of victories
Won and lost.

It tries to remain
There just a little longer
But alas the day is done
And twilight’s shade
Will soon be drawn,

Until the dawn begins again
When it opens its eye to stare
At nature’s endless argument.

Still I sit quietly
From my protected perch,
Thinking I am safe,
As I watch the battle
Of the wet and the weak,
Wondering when the tide
Will finally come for me.
