Sound of uploads

Hello friends,
I've often noticed that my mixed and mastered uploads sound a little different (they seem to sound better) when listening directly to Wikiloops than when I listen to the same (original) mix on my computer. Am I just imagining it or does wikiloops change or optimize something in the sound of the upload? Thank you for your answer. Ray Sugar :o;)

I've noticed changes too (although not always for the better ;) ). I think maybe one reason could be that the quality of the .mp3's which are used for playback on the site is lowered to get a smaller file size?

Yes Ernie! This is the setup I've been using for the last few months and I'm very happy with it. I use Logic Pro as my DAW. I just bought the LANDR Pro plug-in for mastering and am still experimenting. My biggest problem is my broken ears from too many years and too loud Marshall stacks. As a young person you don't think about it much, but as an old man you have to deal with it.

i export MP3s to like 256kbps or better typically. my Audacity setting was in that 220-260 range, and my Reaper setting (i'm not on that computer right now to verify) but it's high as well.

I think the uploads sound totally different after processing. I can't play guitar at all, so I just sing into the microphone as best I can. As soon as I've uploaded it to WL, it suddenly sounds like a guitar. How can something like that work? ;)

@ rootshell: In my opinion your uploads sound pretty good Nick! My uploads are always wave files. I have often noticed that the volume ratios on wikiloops are different to those at home on different output devices. It seems that certain frequencies are played louder or quieter on wiki. Maybe it's also due to my limited mixing and mastering knowledge. I'm having a hard time getting the volume ratios right.

Does your LandR program help? I have hearing problems, old age and damage, tinnitus, hyperacusis. The developer of AI-Master gave me a copy, it has no controls at all which I figure is probably for best as I can't trust my ears. It invariably boosted the highs at first but I've adapted. I'd been shy with high frequencies because a) high mids stab my poorly ears and Higher frequencies I can't hear so tended to roll them off too much to be on the safe side.

@zedders: Well, I'm getting along pretty well with the LANDR Master plug-in now. I don't have tinnitus, but I do have problems with volume and treble loss. I use hearing aids and am mostly quite happy - considering the circumstances. The plug-in always offers various suggestions via AI, which are usually quite useful, but you can then make individual changes to the mastering. You have to experiment a bit and maybe hear someone else's opinion. See the vid please …

I've seen how good it is... but I don't trust myself to turn mastering knobs, tempting though it is! There are quite a few of these programs now with varying amounts of user control aren't there?

Then the website www.bandlab.com might be something for you. If you have registered there for free, you can upload your mp3 for free and edit it using AI mastering (there are always 3 versions to choose from that you can compare with each other) and then download it again. I think the results are pretty good. However, you have to choose a version and this cannot be edited further individually. The site is a bit confusing, but after a while you can find your way around quite easily.
