Here`s what I think about you Wikiloopers

We are a pretty diverse lot on Wikiloops not least when it comes to how we use the platform.

I get the distinct impression that our member base is split into four groups:

a) The “silent” members: Those that use Wikiloops to download templates to play along to in the safety for their homes, be it to practice or just to enjoy playing their instruments with some backing tracks. Either way, they don`t upload anything (not passing judgement, making backing tracks available for download is one of the features of Wikiloops and that can be a one way street)

b) The “vocal” members: There seems to be a group of members who have never uploaded anything or whose uploads were a long time ago but who still maintain an active presence by commenting on tracks or simply keeping in touch.

c) The “shy” members: I`m guessing that there is actually a pretty large group of people who secretly want to contribute to tracks but think they`re not good enough or who are afraid of any reaction they might receive.

d) The “high-frequency” members: Certainly not the largest group but the one with the greatest output (no of uploads) and (pure speculation) also with the highest number of comments and interactions.

d1) The “breakout” members: A subgroup of d) who take their Wikiloops activities outside of the platform, be it through YouTube videos, podcasts, websites etc.

d2) The “gimme more” members: A very small group of active members who also play and perform in on-site/real-world situations.

Note that the groups are not mutually exclusive, indeed I suspect that there`s an overlap between most of them.

So here`s me being curious about groups c) and d)

If you regard yourself as a “shy” member, is there anything that could be done to help you make the leap to becoming more active? (and yes, it seems weird to ask shy members to comment, but some might be willing)

If you belong to the “high-frequency” group, is remote, sequential recording the limit of your goal or are you also looking for the occasional live jamming or even live performing?

I look forward to tons of replies, if not, I`ll probably cry and flood the loops with atonal keyboard experiments.

I am midway between US/Europe and Australia ( Singapore ). I think I am in C and a bit of D and definitely in D2. I find in WL a diversity of instrumments/genre of music/vocals that I explore with flute sounds ( Not the silver classical concert flute but the simpler pentatonic Native American flutes/the Chinese xiao/ rim blown flutes and now the duduk ) so that I can play better as a "busker" in the local hospital.

Hi!
Great question!
I am a new member and would consider myself either in D2 or a new category that plays live but is not a High-frequency contributor.

I have played in live settings for 20 years but stopped for a while because of family matters. I am now finding my way back, and would like to start some session work so this is great experience for me, learning the ins and outs of recording.
Getting and giving honest feedback is key for a forum like this as well.

Thank you for the question!

I seek to engage the unwilling world as accessories to my personal circus of insanity. What letter is that?

Well, you KNOW that the Wikiloops is not unwilling, quite the opposite, judging by your interactions and great adds.

You're very kind but I believe the sign says not to feed the animals.

You forgot to include the sub section of fishy members, of which I am the official (unelected by a huge majority) representative.

I am all of the above and none of the above and also somewhere in the middle, definitely not at the beginning and certainly not at the end .... But I Frequently change from one day to other...unless I decide I'm something else.
I Suppose I could be classed as Wikifluid.

My focus has been shifting into doing Open Mic and Karaoke lately, but I still very much enjoy perusing the tracks commenting and uploading occasionally. Wikiloops is really the only internet musical "community" that I have found. Lots of talented very cool people from all over the world, can't get much better than that. B)

I think I'm a combination of c (believe it or not) and d (d2 more specifically). I also go through periods of writer's block, and longer inactivity for all kinds of reasons (sometimes work, sometimes life events, sometimes I need to focus on a commissioned composition for a choir, etc) where I occasionally listen to a track (wikiloops radio!) but remain mostly silent. When I compose or perform outside of wikiloops, it often is as part of a choir, more or less complementary to what is happening here. At the moment I find contributing to wikiloops "from my couch" is exactly the entertainment I am looking for. I wouldn't mind trying something live some day, but if it requires extensive traveling etc, I'm less interested. I will admit I would have liked to visit the wikiloops gathering last summer, but it was not possible timing-wise due to interference with other things.
