The muted volcano
Sits in the distance,
It’s hot eye
Surveying the landscape.

It has been quiet for many years, until now.

Slowly, it blinks
As its smoke unfurls like a dying flag,
Reaching upward toward the heavens
That are too far away.

There is discord below
As the earth attempts to right itself,
But it’s too late.

As the anger rises upward,
It’s red puss
Pops like a ripe pimple
And explodes,
Hissing as it
Slaps at the sky,
And succumbs to gravity.

Singeing the land below,
It laughs at all the helpless plants,
As it devours everything in its way.
